If you’re in La Paz and looking for something wacky to do on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday, you should try heading up to the highest wrestling ring in the world “El Alto” to catch the CHOLITAS WRESTLING!
El Alto is a high suburb of La Paz about 25 minutes by bus from the city center. The bus journey is spectacular as you can take in some amazing views of the city. Once you get there you’ll be surprised, bang in the middle of mayhem; the wrestling event on Sundays is located in a local community sports center, outside of which is a fun carnival atmosphere with a band, street stalls, food, drinks and the hustle and bustle of family and friends enjoying a Sunday afternoon. And on Tuesdays and Thursdays is located in a “CHOLET” which is a construction that shows the Bolivian Andean Architecture with cultural roots and design with its own identity, inspired by the Andean zone, you will also have the opportunity to visit the top of the building.
The fighting itself is insane; imagine WWF with Cholitas, complete with body slams, flips, props punching, slapping and even fighting over the barriers into the crowd. All the wrestlers are dressed up in costume, and most of the fights include male lucha libre.
